The ending

When first approached about this volume on Black comics, I was interested in doing a comparative piece on Ollie Harrington and some more contemporary artist. I am glad that I did not do this for the exclusive attention on Harrington provided me with greater insight into him, his work as well as the context within which he worked. It is simply a completely different animal to be writing about social, political and economic life in 2011, rather than in 1935. There are clearly still injustices to be discovered, discussed and overcome, but the sheer confluence of factors present when Harrington was producing his cartoons is truly astounding. One can only think that for one who blew so many flames into the souls of Black folk with wit, grace and artistry, that the least we could do is provide some praise and remembrance when given an opportunity.
